Luxor – “city of the dead” and “city of the living”
Luxor is like two different cities, not similar to each other. The right bank (“city of the living”) is known for the Karnak and Luxor temples. On the left bank (in the “city of the dead”) are ancient necropolises, the Memnon colossi and the temple of Queen Hatshepsut. You will visit all these places, compare the two parts of the city and contrast modern life with life several thousand years ago. “City of the Living
First we will go to the “city of the living”. This is a real Egypt with an oriental flavor. Here are residential areas, where there are both modern amenities and signs of the distant past. You will discover a non-tourist Egypt: you will see how locals build houses, get water and spend their free time.
Karnak Temple
Here, in the “city of the living”, is one of the largest structures of antiquity – the Karnak Temple. It was built during the reign of 30 pharaohs! You will see statues of sphinxes with the bodies of lions and the heads of rams, the largest hypostyle hall in the world with 144 columns, as well as a huge scarab beetle made of granite and a sacred lake.
City of the Dead
Next we will move to the other bank of the Nile – to the “city of the dead”. Following ancient traditions, locals practically do not settle in these places. The entire territory is occupied by ruins and memorial temples. You will see the following historical monuments:
— Valley of the Kings with the tomb of Amenhotep III: a grand necropolis where archaeological excavations are still underway.
— Colossi of Memnon: two huge statues 18 meters high and weighing more than 700 tons each.
— Temple of Queen Hatshepsut: a majestic structure at the base of steep cliffs.
— Temple of Ramses III in Medinet Habu is the largest temple in Luxor after Karnak. It is the birthplace of the ancient Egyptian god Amun and the location of one of the most beautiful temples of the Ancient Egyptian era.
